Routine appointments

Queens Park operates an appointment system. You can book an appointment with the Doctor or Practice Nurse by telephoning the surgery on the number listed or calling in to the building in person.

You will always be offered the next available appointment unless you request a certain day or time and will always see the Doctor to who you are allocated. On the occasions when your allocated Doctor is unavailable you will of course be seen by another clinician.

Patients with urgent problems will always be seen the same day by our Nurse Practitioners. One appointment is for one person. Should you require yourself and a child or spouse etc. to be seen together, please explain this to the Receptionist when booking and you will be given two appointments with Doctor or the Advanced Nurse Practitioner. This is to allow enough time for your consultations.

Our senior practice nurses offer a daily minor illness clinic and have received additional training to allow them to diagnose and treat conditions such as:

  • Headlice
  • Urine Infections (e.g. Cystitis)
  • Ear/Throat/Chest or Skin infections
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (Nurse to check Blood Pressure)
  • Contraception (Nurse to check BP)
  • Hayfever

Your receptionist will be able to provide further advice on accessing this service.

Nurse Practitioners

What is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners are trained specialist nurses. They have undertaken additional medical education in order to provide advanced nursing care and to prescribe medication. Nurse Practitioners can provide treatment and advice for many problems for which you may have seen a doctor for in the past. Their main areas of expertise are in the management of common illnesses and long term conditions. The nurse practitioners can assess and examine you, make diagnosis and provide advice and treatment including a prescription if required. They can make referrals to hospital doctors or health care professionals and admit patients into hospital when necessary.

There are some limits to their responsibilities, unfortunately they are unable legally to sign a sickness certificate, however they can ask your GP to issue one. The Nurse Practitioners work closely with your GP and liaise frequently about your care.

What can a Nurse Practitioner treat you for?
  • Acute chest infection
  • Conjunctivitis/sticky discharging eye/Stye
  • Cystitis
  • Diarrhea, constipation, piles
  • Dizziness, unusual headache
  • Earache, swollen glands
  • Thrush
  • Raised temperature that does not improve after home treatment
  • Shingles
  • Tonsillitis, cough, sinusitis, sore throat, colds and flu-like symptoms
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vomiting
  • Wounds or rashes

Nurse Practitioners may also help you with many other problems such as menstrual disorders, unexplained weight loss, breast lumps and depression. Nurse Practitioners can also manage long term conditions such as asthma, eczema and high blood pressure. You are now able to book appointments with one of our Nurse Practitioners online, however please note Natasha Atkinson can only see children above 16 years of age and is unable to see pregnant patients.

Telephone Appointments

In some circumstances your Doctor or Nurse may be able to help you with a problem over the telephone. After you have explained your problem or query to the Receptionist, you will be asked to phone back at a certain time when Doctor/Nurse has finished surgery, (usually between 11.00 and 11.30am).

Your Doctor/Nurse will then either leave a message for you with the Receptionist or will speak to you over the telephone.

All advice given will be recorded in your computer notes.

Emergency Appointments

You will be seen on the same day if your problem is urgent but you will need to inform your Receptionist of this and provide some details to enable us to ensure you are directed to the most appropriate service. An emergency appointment will be with the Advanced Nurse Practitioner. If the surgery is full, you will be given a time for a slot designated for emergencies, should a clinician think that this is inappropriate, you may be asked to make a routine appointment.

Cancelling Appointments

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to keep a booked appointment. In an average week 70 patients fail to attend for their appointments. This means that 70 other patients have to wait longer than necessary for their appointment. You can now cancel an appointment without waiting in a phone queue, just telephone 01642 618170 and select the appropriate option and leave your details. 

Late Arrivals

It may not be possible to see you if you arrive late for your appointment with the doctor or nurse, because this may cause problems for other patients who have appointments. In these circumstances you may be asked to rebook.

Online Appointments

It is now possible to book your appointment online if you have your SystmOne details. You can get these by asking a receptionist when you come in.

Please make sure that you arrive on time for your appointment and if you are unable to make the appointment, please cancel it. If you do not attend for two routine appointments and do not contact the surgery, you will be sent a letter explaining that a further non-attendance will result in removal from the practice list.
